Hamta Pass  4 or 5 Days

Hamta Pass trek is most beautiful trek around Manali and can be done by anyone reasonably fit.  Hamta pass lies on beautiful Pir Panjal range and is small corridor between Lahaul and Kullu valley of Himachal Pradesh. Hamta village is located below Sethan village and from where it got its name. This pass is frequently used by Sheperds of lesser Himalayan region. Seeking for high altitude grassland in the dry cold desert of Lahaul during summer time. Numbers of wild flowers, varieties of herbs can be found at the altitude between 3000 to 3800m.

Setting off from Manali we drive to Chichoga village 2000m (our new starting point of trek) or Sethan. Depending on the time. Starting from Chichoga following the trail through thick forest to Chichoga heights.  The trail passes through thick forest of Deodar, Oak, walnut and Birch tree to Jobri / Chikka, which has beautiful campsite in an open meadows. Starting from Sethan instead of Jobri add 1 hr of plus walks which we call it a warm up. We camp at Chikka starting from Sethan. We camp at Jobri starting from Chichoga. Gradual climb to Jwara and Balu ka gera. Balu ka gera is better known for Bear's den or Bear's circle. Can see only during May end to mid June. Final ascent leads through  boulder and scree to the pass.  Spectacular view of Indrasan 6221m and Deo Tibba 6001m only can have on clear sky. Crossing river near Shia goru camp we descend to river bed and follow the left bank of Chandra River to Chatru. Further 45 km on dirt road, driving up to Kunzom La pass (4551m) having a view of Spiti valley, 8 kms trek down in large meadows, lake of moon approached. It is 4 hrs drive back to Manali crossing Rohtang pass. With magnificent view of Manali and Solang  valley while descending to Kothi.

Miss Koleena, Miss Kahla, Miss Kelly & Miss Heidi - USA - 7th-10th July 2013

“We had a wonderful time trekking up to the Hamta pass. Our guide Ravinder was very knowledgeable and experienced. I felt very safe as he guided us up the mountain to the pass, over some challenging snow terrain. It was first time trekking in the snow. He made me feel safe and relax. He also knew a lot about local culture, conditions and nature which he shared with us when we asked.

The cook was great and made tasty food for us for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The porters were also very friendly and strong. I learnt to make roti/Chapati by the fire before dinner with their help.

The equipment was excellent warm sleeping bags, new tents, even a tent for the nature toilet. Lots of rice, dahl, tea and even hot chips.

The trek itself, the mountains and nature are absolutely breath taking, plenty of waterfalls and spring fed streams. Beautiful big boulders, pristine rivers and snow. Large Cedar, walnut, chestnut and plenty of other trees below the snowlines. Truly an unforgettable experience.

We will be come back to do it again and different treks too.

POTALA is great locally owned and operated company and we highly recommend them. ”

“Potala Adventurers has gone out of the way to make my Hamta pass trek truly memorable. The Guide and porters were true professionals. They were able to assist me in providing information to questions I have and also helped me cross steep glaciers along the way. This is crucial for me, having little experience walking in ice. I also wish to compliment them on the elaborated food dished out every day and appreciate the extra blankets when weather turns cold. I also deeply appreciate the company for helping me make pre and post trip accommodation and onward travel arrangements without being asked and providing invaluable advice”.

Mr David L. – SINGAPORE – 11 June 2011

“I went on the Hamta pass trek in early June. I had not read much about the trek before I left, so I didn’t know what I had coming. I was positively surprised with the good knowledge the Guide had about the areas we were passing through. He seems to have real passion for mountains and trekking, which was really encouraging for me. The cook did his best to provide us with the nice dishes as far as it could be done. All the staff on the trek acted professionally in every situation, even when my trek partner was forced to make decision to return with the porters. The cook and the Guide did their best to serve me the food I needed on the last two days of the trek, although we didn’t carry any cooking equipment with us. The tent and sleeping bags we were given were also just right for the wind and weather conditions. Altogether an amazing experience I won’t forget”.

Miss Charlotte L. – NORWAY, 13 June 2011

To Potala Adventurers - "For the first time person like one coming to the Himalayas, with no apparent experience in high altitude trekking. My mind was little tensed, but once we arrived at Manali and met Mr. Tenzin Ningbo and he detailed us about the trip and when we met our guide our worries began to slow down.

I must sincerely thank the whole crew and Potala Adventurers for organizing us such a beautiful trek. The whole crew was excellent.

The guide Mr. Tashi was superb. His care and his skills in the snow and mountain was a pleasure to watch.

The cook Mr. Kishan was also helpful and caring, preparing delicious food and watching us in each step.

The porter who gave us a good company and treated us like real guests was also enjoyable.

In brief we had a beautiful experience and i have made up my mind that I will be back for more in the Himalayas next time with Potala Adventurers”.

Mr Krishna and friend – BANGALORE- 31-05-2009

“I would like to recommend Potala Adventurers for organizing an excellent trek over Hamta Pass. As I was on my own I was surprised to get such a good rate for my guide / cook. The scenery up to Hampta pass is spectacular and the places we camped were picturesque. We took the five days slowly and you could do it faster. But if you are interested in taking in what surrounds you. And like to take your time to acclimatize then the Hampta pass trek is for you. Thanks again for Potala Adventurers for their excellent, advice and for their organization”.

Mr Peter Mallet, IRELAND

“Hamta pass, Lahoul valley 5 days. Prem was the guide, a good guide who knows everything on Himalayas and local life. Lobsang was the cooker. He is a good cooker. He can make everything with nothing. Thanks for all”.
